The Essential Engine Maintenance Guide: Oil Changes & Types

Engine oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. It performs four critical roles: lubricating moving components to prevent metal friction, transferring heat away from cylinder walls, sealing combustion pressures, and suspending carbon soot particles. Neglecting oil changes is the single fastest way to destroy internal bearings and cause catastrophic cylinder seizures.

Oil Change Intervals under Local Driving Conditions

Sri Lanka's tropical climate, combined with stop-and-go city traffic, puts severe thermal stress on engine oil. Standard manufacturer manuals often assume open-highway driving. In local conditions, we recommend the following intervals:

  • Mineral Engine Oils: Change every 5,000 km or 6 months (whichever occurs first). Mineral oils break down faster under high heat.
  • Semi-Synthetic Oils: Change every 7,500 km or 6 months. These offer a great middle-ground for daily commuters.
  • Fully Synthetic Oils: Change every 10,000 km or 12 months. These contain advanced chemical additives that maintain molecular structure even during bumper-to-bumper city crawls.

Understanding Oil Viscosities

Using the wrong viscosity rating can cause low oil pressure warnings or engine oil consumption. Always match your engine's clearance tolerances:

  • 0W-20 / 5W-20: Extremely thin oils designed for modern gasoline engines and hybrid drivetrains (e.g. Toyota, Honda compact engines). They reduce drag to optimize fuel efficiency.
  • 5W-30: The industry standard for most modern passenger gasoline and diesel engines. Offers excellent wear protection and thermal stability.
  • 10W-40 / 15W-40: Thicker viscosity grades suited for older, higher-mileage engines or heavy-duty diesel engines where wider tolerances require a heavier lubricating film.

During every oil change at TDC, we replace the engine oil filter with a premium OEM-spec filter to ensure no carbon abrasive material recirculates back into your clean oil lines.
